This Sunday, 5th June is World Environmental Day (DAY) and every year since 1973 this day has been to help stimulate awareness of the environment within countries all over the world. Each year this day is hosted by a different country and a different theme and this year the United Nations Environment program (UNEP) announced it will be hosted in India and the theme will be ‘Forests: Nature at your service’. This theme also supports the UN International Year of Forests for 2011.
One third of the earth’s land mass is covered by forest and without it life would not possibly exist. Forests not only provide us with the oxygen we need to breathe, but also battle for us against climate change by storing carbon; a home and ecosystem to thousands of animal, insects and plants; and continually provide a diverse range of essential resources.
