A special programme for youth hostel managers and supervisors sponsored by the British Consulate-General, Chongqing, and co-organized by YH China took place at Camellia Youth Hostel last month in June.
It was a program specially designed to provide an opportunity for selected hostel managers and supervisors from Yunnan and neighbouring provinces (Chongqing, Sichun, Guizhou and Guangxi), through a residential experience and different types of activities, to achieve a better understanding of conservation and sustainability as well as environmental awareness and practices.
The program covered a wide range of interesting activities, some physically challenging and others requiring a certain degree of thinking and creativity. In addition, sustainable development was one of the important elements in the program by means of discussion and learning by example and experience.
During their stay, participants saw, felt and exchanged views on how we could have a low carbon living without employing hi-tech system or grand investment. This led participants to rethink what they could do in their daily lives and how much they could help in saving the environment.
The workshop was held to exchange experiences and ideas in order to formulate an action plan for promoting and implementing environmental practices from bottom to top. A total of 38 actions were developed to be followed up in the next 12 months.
Camellia Youth Hostel was voted the best sustainable hostel in China by international travellers in 2011!
