Celebrating International Day of Friendship: How HI Fosters Cultural Exchange and Connections Internally Too!

The International Day of Friendship on 30th July is the perfect time to reflect on ties that unite us across borders and cultures. At HI we are dedicated to promoting cultural exchange and building meaningful connections among travellers worldwide: we strive to create a global community where friendships are formed and cultural understanding flourishes.

One of our key initiatives that embody these values internally is our HI-Connect programme. This unique work exchange programme allows staff and volunteers from across our global network to experience working in a different hostel or head office in another country. The HI-Connect programme is a testament to our commitment to cultural exchange and personal development, and how we foster these values internally as well.

What is the HI-Connect programme?

The HI-Connect programme offers an exciting opportunity for staff and volunteers to step out of their comfort zones and immerse themselves in new environments. Participants spend time working in a different hostel or head office, gaining hands-on experience, learning new skills, and understanding different cultural practices. This exchange not only enhances their professional growth but also enriches their personal lives with unforgettable experiences and lasting friendships.

Why HI-Connect Matters

  1. Fostering Cultural Exchange: By living and working in a new country, participants get a firsthand experience of different cultures. They learn to appreciate diverse perspectives and traditions, understanding more about their own cultural bias and and fostering mutual respect.
  2. Promoting Diversity: The programme brings together individuals from various backgrounds, creating a melting pot of ideas and experiences. This diversity is our strength, driving innovation and understanding within our global network.
  3. Building Connections: HI-Connect is not just about professional development; it’s about building a global community. Participants return with new friends, broader networks, and a deeper sense of belonging to the worldwide HI family.

Celebrating Success Stories

Participants have shared how their experiences have transformed their perspectives, boosted their confidence, and inspired them to contribute more actively to their local hostels. Host hostels, in turn, benefit from the fresh perspectives and unique skills that participants bring, enriching the hostel environment for all guests.
