Eat your way around Australia with @girleatworld

Last month, food and travel instagrammer Melissa, the ‘girl’ in @girleatworld embarked on a trip down under with YHA Australia, beginning in the Northern Territory and heading down to Sydney, New South Wales before winding up in Victoria’s Melbourne.

Covering a whole lot of ground, her journey captured in beautifully composed foodie photos gives us some great ideas about how to eat our way around Australia:

Northern Territory

This ANZAC biscuit eaten by the salt-covered Lake Amadeus chain is a commemoration of those who fought in WWI. It is said that the wives of soldiers would make these for the troops to snack on, since the ingredients (rolled oats, sugar, plain flour, coconut, butter, golden syrup or treacle, bi-carbonate of soda and boiling water) would keep for ages.

The Aussie way to have fish ‘n’ chips, by the beach in the sunset, in Darwin on a Sunday, with the Mindil Sunset Market on.

On a 3 day camping tour to Kakadu and Litchfield. Snacking on an Iced VoVo (a classic Australian biscuit with pink icing, jam and coconut) at the top of Ubirr Rock, a beautiful national park full of Aboriginal painting on the rock walls.

A hot air balloon to watch the sun rise deep in Australia’s outback, the Red Desert. Here she is eating a Lamington, a very Australian cake described as “sponge cake covered in a dark rich chocolate coating and rolled in coconut shaving”.

What the locals are eating in Sydney: first up is this ridiculously surreal ice cream on clouds ☁️ from Aqua S, best dubbed as “ice cream made for instagram”. This is the seasalt and grapefruit flavour with caramel popcorn and candy floss topping.

The highly requested Tim Tam at Australia’s most iconic landmark, Sydney Opera House.

In Newtown, an eclectic neighbourhood in Sydney. Whilst you are spoiled for choice in Newtown, this delicious and insta-worthy Strawberry Watermelon cake with Rose cream from Black Star Pastry is a must.

Last Sunset in Sydney, Pavlova Gelato from Gelatissimo at The Rocks, Sydney’s oldest neighbourhood.

Fish and chips at the Royal Botanic Garden next to the Sydney Opera House!
