Meet your HI hostel staff: Sydney Harbour YHA

Sydney Harbour YHA has been awarded Best Australian Hostel 2013 at the Australian Tourism Awards – and it’s not hard to see why!

The hostel in Sydney, Australia, provides guests with the ultimate hostelling experience: a large rooftop terrace offering spectacular panoramic views over the iconic Sydney Harbour, a large common room, comfortable TV room, coffee bar and travel desk to help you plan your Sydney itinerary.

The hostel is within walking distance to some of Sydney’s best, and most popular, sights and attractions including Harbour Bridge and its thrilling BridgeClimb experience, The Rocks with its historic pubs and markets, and plenty of water-based activities such as jet boating and harbour cruises.

We spoke to Natalie Hood, the Group and Agent Coordinator at the multi-award winning hostel, and she told us what it’s like to work for such an amazing hostel in such a fantastic location.

The best thing about my hostel is… our pride and joy: the beautiful roof terrace with sweeping views of Sydney Harbour from the Harbour Bridge to the Opera House.

The best part of my job is… hearing about the inspiring trips our guests are taking. They may just be one of hundreds of guests staying with us that night, but for them this is a trip of a lifetime!

My best memory of working at my hostel is… spending New Year’s Eve on the terrace with uninterrupted views of the fireworks over the Harbour Bridge and the Opera house. What a night!

The worst memory of working at my hostel is… the day we didn’t realise how big the International Fleet Review was going to be and the hostel was swamped with people trying to get a good view. Very hectic.

I love working in my city because… my walk to work is over the Harbour Bridge.

The best piece of advice I can give to a traveller visiting my city is… book ahead, Sydney gets very busy on weekends!

The best place to eat in my city is… Satang Thai on Quay Street or any of the other great restaurants in Chinatown. I also love the cafes and restaurants in Newtown. They have dishes from all over the world and won’t cost you your entire life savings.

The best place to relax in my city is… our rooftop terrace with a good book in the brilliant Sydney sunshine.

Travellers are beneficial to my city because… they make it such a multicultural metropolis that there is never ever a dull moment.

On my days off I like to… catch the ferry to Manly and sit in the Bavarian Beer Cafe on the water’s edge or do the Bondi to Coogee walk along the headlands.
