Snow fun in Japan

Known as the ‘Land of the Rising Sun’ this region of Asia is an incredible and spirited place to visit – history meets futurism and tradition contrasted with forward-thinking trends. This is a country full of beautiful contradictions for visitors to enjoy: major cities such as Tokyo and Osaka which are modern and dynamic global hubs; rural and mountainous regions perfect for high octane skiing and rafting; and areas populated with ancient religious temples and beautiful gardens. HI has many hostels in Japan – 38 of which are bookable on hihostels.com. To inspire you, here are some fantastic things to do and some unforgettable places to stay…

Hot springs of Hokkaido

Japan 1

During the winter there is plenty to do in and around HI’s Nukabira – Higashidaisetsu Nukabira hostel. It is located in the Daisetsuzan National Park in Hokkaido surrounded by trees and lakes. Nukabira Onsen-kyo (hot spring village) is in the centre of Hokkaido and is a wonderful experience. There is also a local ice fishing tour on the frozen Lake Nukabira and the skiing resort is just 5 minutes walk from the hostel. This is a great place for those who want to relax and explore this wintery destination and international flights to and from Haneda Airport (Tokyo International) make this area of Japan extremely accessible.

Visit Sapporo Snow Festival

Japan 2

This is one of Japan’s largest and most successful winter events – not to be missed! Be one of the two million who come to see the amazing and spectacular sculptures. For a week in February the area is transformed into a true winter wonderland of gleaming crystal-like ice and snow. You can stay in the Sapporo International hostel located in the Hokkaido region with good transport links. Multi-share dormitories, private singles and twins, family rooms and traditional Japanese style Tatami rooms are available.

Ski and stay at Niseko Annupuri

Why not visit this Japanese ski resort, which boasts some of the driest and lightest powder snow in the world. The Niseko Annupuri hostel, located very near to Niseko Annupuri International Ski Ground, is built from wood and is really popular with those who love the snow sports. Seasonal activities also include rafting, canoeing, trekking and climbing Mt. Yotei –this really is the place for great adventures!
