5 unusual cinemas

Are you looking for something fun and a bit quirky to do with your friends or loved ones? How about going to a cinema? You might ask yourself what’s so unusual about the cinema, but enjoying a movie can be a truly unique experience. There are several funky cinemas around the world where you can enjoy a movie in an unusual setting and with a special cultural flavour.

Here are five of the best experiences we have found:

Underground Cinema

Do you want to shake things up a bit? Then the Underground Cinema, which is held in secret locations around Sydney and Melbourne, is the right choice for you. The film screenings could happen anywhere and what movie is going to play is also undisclosed. On top of that, to make it even more unpredictable, you will be given instructions to dress appropriately for a specific theme. Being a social media enthusiast is a plus as all the information is provided only 24 hours before the event. Are you in?

Sol cinema

Here at Hostelling International, we are all about sustainable travel so finding this mobile cinema made us really happy. This unique cinema, which travels around the UK, is run purely by the sun and can accommodate eight people in total – making it the world’s smallest solar cinema. Make your visit truly personal, bring you own movie you want to watch, sit back and enjoy.

Where to stay:

Stay at London Thameside and take a day trip to Dartford where Sol cinema is off to in November.

Cuddling cinema

Yes, that’s right in Malaysia you can actually go to a cuddling movie theatre. If you fancy snuggling up with your other half , then this is the place you should go to as it is specifically designed to enable the couple to snuggle while on a date (don’t be tempted to fall asleep though).

Where to stay:

There are three hostels in Kuala Lumpur to choose from and all are located centrally, in a colourful neighbourhood, rich in culture and constantly buzzing with activity.

Electric Dusk Drive-In

How about a bit of nostalgia? Drive-in theatres are quite scarce these days and you can’t have this retro-style experience everywhere. However in Los Angeles, you can have a drive-in and rooftop experience at the same time as the screenings are based on top of the parking garage.

Where to stay:

Stay at HI-Santa Monica Hostel ideally located close to all major attractions while offering a relaxed environment at the same time.

4DX

New technologies are currently pushing the boundaries of all industries and the options of what is possible or not are stretching. This can be seen in 4DX cinema, in Seoul in South Korea, which takes traditional 3D cinemas to the next level by introducing special effects such as movement, wind, water and other real-life sensations which can make you jump out of your seat. If you are a big fan of amusement park-type effects, this is the right place for you.

Where to stay:

There are six hostels in Seoul, all of which can guarantee you a pleasant stay in the centre of a vibrant city.
