Kunming Heart 2 Heart Youth Hostel has won a Bronze Award for Creative Charity Project in the 2013 China National Charity Contest.
A total of 461 projects were competing on this occasion. It is the first project in China to combine a youth hostel and rural social work, focusing on an ethnic minority group with residential social workers involved.
H2H Youth Hostel is a social enterprise project, which provides integrated social services in Tuan Jie Zhen, on the outskirts of Kunming, Yunnan. This hostel is also a recreational and training base for its parent body, Heart to Heart Community Care’s beneficiaries. The aforementioned is a registered charity with special interest in helping migrant worker communities to improve their quality of life in connection with personal value, dignity, rights, and social security.
The hostel was formerly a “Mei” ethnic minority dwelling; with its facade untouched, it has been converted into contemporary accommodation in the beautiful countryside of Kunming. With plenty of open space, an amphitheatre, a meeting room, a camp site and open courtyard, this hostel is ideal for a retreat in the countryside, outdoor activities, training sessions and conferences. There are also historical temples, ethnic minority villages, bike tracks, country parks, rock climbing walls, a grass ski field, a pottery workshop, a paintball range and walking trails in the vicinity. In addition, the route to Tuan Jie Zhen is a popular and challenging route for cyclists.
There are many organic fruits and vegetables available for sale and visitors are able to pick strawberries, apples, plums and pears, when in season.
H2H Youth Hostel runs a variety of programmes from sustainability development, environmental awareness, youth and children interest/study groups, social learning, to offering internships for social work and social enterprise management students. Its partner universities include Yunnan University, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Taiwan Catholic University, Alabama University and Chicago University.
Proceeds from this hostel are solely for the purpose of charitable-related activities.
