Bavarian Cities: a journey from the middle ages to the present day

Bavaria is a state of Germany, located in the southeast of the country, which is known for its towering mountains and clear blue lakes, as well as towns and cities full of magnificent buildings and squares steeped in history. Spring is an ideal time for a trip to Bavaria. Café terraces start to get busy, sun worshippers relax in parks and people gather in the many famous beer gardens. Whether you plan to visit the cosmopolitan city of Munich, Würzburg on the river Main, picturesque Rothenburg ob der Tauber or the medieval city of Regensburg on the Danube, they all offer heaps of history, culture and sports and radiate with “joie de vivre”. Hostelling International would like to recommend some of  the most attractive Bavarian destinations with centrally located youth hostels, ideal for exploring these beautiful cities.

Munich

Stroll along the canal from Nymphenburg Castle, through the relaxed district of Neuhausen, towards the city centre and the Frauenkirche (Church of our Lady). In central Munich you’ll find plenty of shops to explore and when you struggle with all your shopping bags and need a break head for the Englische Garten (English Garden) and the Eisbach stream. Munich is great for art lovers and techies alike. Museums and art galleries thrive from the new and old Pinakothek, BMW Museum, Deutsches Museum and many more. Munich offers vibrant and varied nightlife with trendy bars, clubs and plenty of festivals. The festival season starts in spring with the Auer Dult fair and concludes in the annual Oktoberfest when locals slip into their “Dirndl” dresses and “Lederhosen” for the world’s largest festival. Whatever your plans, München-City and München-Park youth hostels offer the perfect accommodation for a city break in the Bavarian capital, from only €25.60 per person/per night, breakfast included.

Explore the prince-bishop’s baroque residence in the city centre or take part in Europe’s largest Africa festival in June.
