Iceland and Reykjavik win Lonely Planet‘s Best in Travel
It looks like both Iceland and its capital city Reykjavik are high up on your list of places to travel this year as both have been voted top country and top city to visit by readers of the Lonely Planet. Each year the Lonely Planet runs its ‘Best in Travel Readers Choice Awards’ where thousands of readers vote on their top destination for the year. Iceland comes a most definite first place with nearly a third of the total votes with the next country Italy receiving 13% of the share. Reykjavik also wins top city hands down. You can buy Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2012 here.
When people think of Iceland, they normally think of gazing the night sky for the Northern Lights, one of the natural wonders of the world; swimming in mineral-rich geothermal pools like the Blue lagoon; or visiting an active volcano – remember Eyjafjallajökull or ‘AY-yah-FYET-lah-YOH-koot’ if you would like to pronounce it. Even without these once-in-a-lifetime events, Iceland still offers many more fantastic attractions to suit everyone including whale watching, glacier tours, river rafting, horse riding tours and many more. Many more Icelandic Attractions can be found here.
Visiting Reykjavik is as close to the top of the world as most people are likely to go with it being the world’s northernmost capital city of a sovereign state. Reykjavik offers many natural and cultural attractions; wonderful peaceful cafes to enjoy watching Icelandic life; its nightlife is legendary and surrounding views are incredible.
