We’d like to introduce our new CEO, Brianda Lopez!

Q. You are the first woman CEO of Hostelling International, since you’ve taken on the role in September 2020 what have been your priorities and what do you intend to bring to the organisation? 

It is such a great honour to be the first woman CEO of HI. I love working for this organisation as I believe travel can contribute greatly towards society, local economies and the planet. My priorities, as you can imagine, have been, as for many others worldwide, to navigate the pandemic and get ready for the future. There is an opportunity, we should not miss, not to go back to “business-as-usual”. We can learn from our past, try to understand why we got into this situation and rethink what the future should be.

As a new leader of the organisation, but also a sustainability leader, I intend to continue transforming HI following what we call in sustainability the ‘Outside-in vs Inside-out strategy’ or working towards being a ‘True Sustainability Organisation’.

HI does a lot environmentally and socially; globally and locally in 77 destinations since it was born over 80 years ago, and it is in our DNA and charity object to do so. 

Now the question is, how can we do better? What does the future generation, expect from our organisation? How can we have a greater contribution? These are not questions that should be answered individually, but in collaboration. 

Q. What is your most memorable hostel experience as a traveller? 

This is a very difficult question; hostels have played a very relevant part in my travel history.

First, as a young person travelling with my school and group of friends, then as an au pair in Australia and later on with my best friend and her daughter and today I work in this great organisation. I love the diversity of our network and how connected they are to the local communities and experiences as well as the safe and quality environment they provide and the strong values. Staying in a hostel changed my life, I was there during my Barcelona 92 volunteering experience and, in a common room, I heard a group of international people talking and having a lot of fun. I realized that I was not able to talk to them because my English was not very good (I’m from Spain) and I was not brave enough to join them, I lacked self-confidence.

Two years later, I left my job and was travelling to Australia to spend nine months as an au pair to learn English and discover an amazing country. I stayed in hostels there and I came back as a different person. I left as a Spaniard and came back as a world citizen. Putting yourself out of your comfort zone may be challenging, but it’s a very powerful experience. 

Q. What message do you want to share with our global community of travellers for 2021? 

We have such a great community out there that share our values, and love for responsible travel. I’m confident that international travel will resume during 2021, and we will be able to facilitate youth travel again and provide great experiences to our travellers. We are ready for them to come back! We will continue to provide quality and sustainability-oriented hostels to empower travellers through intercultural interaction, experiences, new friendship and exploration. I would say, don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone, and explore this beautiful world and yourself. If you dream of a different world, stand up for it! We cannot change the past, but everything we do today will change the future, it is in our hands.

What is the HI Sustainability Fund

The Hostelling International Sustainability Fund (HISF) was initiated in 2013 as a step to facilitate the implementation of the HI Sustainability Charter (2010).

HISF encourages participation of HI hostels across the network in contributing to reducing carbon emissions and advancing sustainable developments and initiatives. Its goal, to promote a sustainable mindset across HI’s key stakeholders; our member associations, global community of travellers and partners, while progressing towards achieving carbon neutrality across our diverse network.

Through donations, HISF provides our guests with the opportunity to offset their overnights and reduce the carbon footprint of their stay.

Over 600 tonnes of Carbon are offset annually through projects awarded by the fund.

Why Vote

As the HISF is sustained by the generosity of conscientious travellers that have donated to the fund through our booking platform, we believe that you should have the right to decide which projects will be granted the HI Sustainability Fund for 2020.

4. Work or Volunteer

We love volunteers and host them all over the world in our hostels, but it’s safe to say it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. They are sought after across the world for their passion, and many organisations offer short-term and long-term opportunities which can seem endless; from building wells in Uganda, working on an animal conservation project in Costa Rica to teaching English in another country, it’s no surprise!

It’s always best to do your homework on the legitimacy of the organisation you’re looking to work with, how much impact they have and things like whether they will provide accommodation or whether you have to pay in order to participate.

For those of you who have or are going to work abroad, find out if you’re eligible for an international tax rebate.

5. Track Your Footprint

Leave no trace when you travel by taking as little with you as possible, recycling as you go or even get involved in local initiatives to give back where you can.

It is impossible to totally avoid emitting CO2 while travelling, so instead, why not try to offset your impact? By consciously choosing where and how you eat, stay and shop you are already taking a big step in reducing your carbon footprint. Looking into companies who share your ideology is a big start.

6. Share Your Experience

We know you’ve heard it all before, but what if we told you that climate change is effecting the way we travel forever?

Remember that one spot you always said you’d visit again, or that one destination you’ve always wanted to visit, but haven’t gotten around to yet? They are at serious risk of reaching their sell-by-date. But, there are things you can do at home and on your travels, to help the world that you want to see, mostly at no extra cost to you.

From Iceland to South Africa, here are 10 places to visit before they disappear.

1. Diving in the Great Barrier Reef

Best time to visit: Jun – Oct

Whether you’re a snorkeler or pro-scuba diver, the sights of the Great Barrier Reef are surely not to be missed by anyone. A site of remarkable beauty and variety stretches over 2,300km over North East coast of Australia, brimming with marine life and drawing millions of tourists each year.

However over 50% of the reef has been destroyed by coral bleaching due to a consistent rise in ocean temperatures since 2016. In 3 years, climate change has managed to deplete half of a 500,000 year old reef. With the best time to visit being between June and October, get your diving gear and head over to Queensland to see and be part of the change.

What exactly can you do to help the reef?

• Support marine conservation initiatives, e.g. by volunteering
• Help educate others about marine life and climate change
• Follow the reef-etiquette when diving, choose tour operators who are eco-certified and encourage sustainable diving!

2. Exploring the Amazon Rainforest

Best time to visit: throughout

Another obvious destination is the largest rainforest on earth. It’s biodiversity and natural beauty call to every traveller, in any season as “The Lungs of the Planet” stretches over 9 countries!

Yet despite it’s size, climate change has enforced fragility upon the countless habitats. Droughts are leaving tropical jungles more susceptible to forest fires, and deforestation levels have reached up to 2 acres by the minute. Environmentalists fear that we will see a sufficient increase in deforestation in the coming months, affecting over 10 million species and 20% of the entire world’s oxygen.

How can we help the Amazon?

• Support Rainforest Action Network
• Reduce your oil consumption
• Reduce your paper and wood consumption. A small thing like purchasing products with the highest percent of recycled materials can go a long way!

3. Everglades, Florida

Best time to visit: Dec – Apr (dry season)

This enormous wetland is listed as a World Heritage Site, due to it’s fragile ecosystem which plays host to manatees, alligators, panthers, dolphins (and much more!). Not only is it a top tourist destination for dangerous wildlife and humidity, but you can also ride in airboats, kayak or drive through certain areas of the park whilst taking in all of the blue scenery.

A huge restoration project has impacted the Everglades over the last 20 years, where minimal wildlife populations have bounced back and water that was once diverted from Lake Okeechobee is being funnelled back into the park, however this water that was once blue and housed many species is rapidly losing its colour. This year, the park is less than half its original size and filled with species disturbing the natural inhibitors, (e.g. Burmese pythons and unwanted, exotic plants) due to nutrient pollution caused by climate change.

What can we do?

• Keep electronic devices off & unplugged when exploring the park (this is a requirement for Airboats and other activities around the park)
• Avoid littering at all costs to maintain the natural habitats that are vital to restoring the park
• Carpool or avoid driving in places where you can walk, cycle or opt for public transport!

4. Hike or Ski in The Swiss Alps

Best time to visit: Jan – Mar

Ever heard of horseback riding or tennis on The Swiss Alps? Resorts are already in preparation for the effects that rising temperatures will have on Alpine nature, as scientists predict that tourists will have to hike above the 10k foot mark to even see the snow on the mountains.

It’s safe to say, if you have ever wanted to hike or ski the Alps, there’s never been a better time.

Here’s how you can do your part on your visit:

• Travel by train if possible (or take a non-stop flight)
• Buy local biological products
• Avoid bottled water, Swiss tap water tastes just the same!

5. Climb Machu Picchu, Peru

Best time to visit: Apr – Oct

The revolutionary sweet spot of Peru, the not so “Lost City” of the Inca. The sights of the citadel truly do speak for themselves, and you can choose to take it all in on the single-day Inca trail, or opt for the full 4-5 days (dependant on experience).

Machu Picchu was classified as an endangered site back in 2016 due to environmental damage and erosion, but today the extremities are much worse. The city sits 2,400 meters above sea level, between the Amazon and the Andes, giving the citadel a very particular climate throughout the year, usually consisting of one dry and one rainy season. Heavier rainfall threatens the architecture of the ruins, which was built in 1450. While there may be no rush to see the Eiffel Tower or the Statue of Liberty, Machu Picchu is a must-see whilst so much is accessible.

Ways you can help:

• Sign the petition to prevent further pollution from a new airport
• Take the train, not the plane (or rent-a-car with Hertz upon your arrival and get 10% off).
• Invest in companies that support solutions for climate change, did you know there are banks with green initiatives?

6. Roam Venice, Italy

Best time to visit: Apr - Jun, Sep – Oct

The only postcard-perfect capital with canals for roads, gondolas for transport and sights that will last forever. You can’t get much more sustainable than that, right?

The floating city has been slowly sinking for centuries, however recurring floods are only speeding up the structural damage of it’s architecture. Despite the many projects launched to prevent the Venetian floods, like the Moses Project, a further three foot rise in sea levels would render Venice the world’s first underwater city. Interestingly, Venice has always faced serious threats from floods head on, and with tourism booming, this does allow the city to muster the means to protect itself, as well as sculptures aiming to heighten the importance of the impending climate change, like The Giant Hands of Venice’s Grand Canal.

How you can help prevent rising sea levels:

• Help protect the wetlands that act as coastal buffers by getting involved in restoration activities near you
• Plant more trees
• Reduce your paper consumption.

7. Party in Rio, Brazil

Best time to visit: Dec – Mar (February for the Carnival!)

Although the words Brazil and Carnival seem to go hand in hand, the rhythms of the samba and frevo can be heard throughout the year! Brazil has been said to be the world leader of nightlife. The unifying beats of the steel bass drums will have you dancing until dawn in Sao Paulo or taking it to a white-sand beach in Florianópolis for a very, memorable evening (or morning!).

Unfortunately, these explosive scenes will be tarnished by climate change, as experts predict Rio to be the most effected South American city. If temperatures continue to increase and sea levels rise, those beaches and neighbourhoods will have flooded entirely, leading to water shortages and even landslides.

How can you help save Rio? You’d be surprised how easy it is:

• Actually eat the food that you buy (and try and lessen your meat consumption)
• Switch to LED light-bulbs, they’re actually cheaper too!
• Try not to leave fully charged devices plugged in, and unplug appliances when you are not using them.

8. Explore Glaciers in Iceland

Best time to visit: Feb – Mar, Sep – Oct

While climate change is not currently having an impact on Iceland’s booming tourism, it looms over the future of this island’s small population. The nation of glaciers is under threat from warmer temperatures, melting glaciers and rising land, however it is yet to be determined how these will shape the land of ice and fire, as they are a global leader in clean energy generation. One thing is for certain, there will never be a better time to visit Iceland than right now.

9. Whale Watching in Cape Peninsula, South Africa

Best time to visit: Jun – Nov

One of the best spots around for whale watching, is none other than the coast of Cape Town. You can track sharks, dolphins, penguins as well as whales, on a seven day adventure with Natural World Safaris, who support lots of wildlife conservation projects around the world. Despite the many initiatives in place to protect Cape Town, there has been a serious decrease in average rainfall and a surge in maximum temperatures, affecting vital water resources.

• Plant indigenous/drought resistant trees at home
• Reduce, reuse, recycle (yes, it’s that easy)
• Use water wisely!

10. Stargazing in Chile, Atacama Desert

Best time to visit: Sep – Nov, Mar – May (shoulder seasons)

The Chilean Plateau plays host to one of the oldest deserts known to man, the Atacama Desert. It is said to be one of the world’s most glorious spots for stargazing at night, however visiting during daytime definitely has its perks too; there are lagoons, salt flats, mountains and geysers to explore! You would think that desert wildlife would continue to thrive in the hottest, driest places on earth, but increasing temperatures and severe droughts are pushing them to physiological limits. Higher risk of wildfires and waterholes drying up are among the threats of global warming on deserts, so here are some final solutions on how to get involved:

• Invest in renewables where possible
• Look for the Energy Star Label when buying new appliances
• Vote! All levels of government have a large influence over our ability to lower emissions and heighten awareness and action.

Breaking Down Cultural Barriers

This year we are celebrating hostellings role in peace building with a Culture Box Exchange! Twenty-five associations across 5 continents will take part, by exchanging boxes with culturally significant items to highlight unique aspects of the senders region. Our aim is to inspire a sharing of knowledge, a breakdown of stereotypes and to create meaningful connections with people from around the globe whilst we travel.

Empowering Young People Across the World

On the 21st of September, each association participating in the Culture Box exchange will host a youth panel, encouraging cultural learning and understanding and giving future influencing generations a platform to share their vision of a peace-positive world.

During the panel, we asked our guest speakers involved in youth empowerment, travel and hosteling, what peace means to them, how they contribute towards peace both personally and professionally and how it impacts us all as travellers.

Age is Just a Number

Myth-conception 3: What if I don’t want to stay in a bunk bed?

We get it. Romantic weekend away for two? Family holiday? How about a school trip? Not really a hostel environment, right? Wrong. 

Book a private room for 2 for your romantic weekend away, private bathroom and breakfast often included. Book a dorm for the family, or multiple private rooms. And a school trip? Myth-conception 4: Does staying at a hostel reflect my bank account?

How many people have you ever met at a hotel bar? Hosteling attracts a specific type of personality and like-minded people. Simply put, the ones that love to travel and crave new experiences. Forget about the image that comes with staying in an Airbnb, there’s a reason that best-selling authors, musicians and other creatives choose those independent cafes, quiet spaces (and hostels!) when they can pretty much afford anywhere else. There’s just something about them, like that one specific location you think back to where you felt completely at ease… If this sounds like you and you haven’t given a hostel a go yet, add it to your bucket-list for an entirely different outlook.

Some of the most memorable scenes to grace our eyes were filmed here, including Cersei’s walk of shame, Ned Stark’s unfortunate demise and Joffrey meets a fate we all waited far too long for. If you look back, are you lost?  5. “Essos”, aka Ait Benhaddou   Relive Dany’s search for The Unsullied through the Moroccan city made entirely of clay… This location is primarily favoured for representing the slave-trading city of Yunkai, Pentos, and the home of The Unsullied army (“Astapor” aka Essaouira, Morocco) is a mere 6 hour drive away, with plenty to see on the way there!   Fall right back into the series upon arrival at either of these two cities, they definitely make you feel at throne. I mean, home.

Where to stay: view closest hostel from £9 >     Sun, sea and suspicious… Dragons!   6. “Dorne”, aka Seville   In true Game of Throne’s style, the setting for one of the most loathed plot-lines, is also the most captivating. But what the series doesn’t let on, is that Seville is somehow even more beautiful when you see it with your very own eyes.   You can visit the stunning palace gardens where Trystane played with Myrcella or take a short trip by bus over to the Real Alcázar to set your sights on the Moorish Baths, where the Sand Snakes  plot the killing of Myrcella in “Unbowed, unbent, unbroken” (s5e06). 

 

  7. “The Dragonpit”, aka Itálica   Pretty self explanatory, and well, if you don’t know… you literally know nothing.   The Dragonpit is a huge structure situated in King’s Landing that the Targaryen’s used as a stable to hold their dragons, and it was destroyed during the “Dance of the Dragons” civil war, where the remaining dragons were said to have died out, alas the Dragonpit was never rebuilt and left in the ruins that we see in season 7.   It is rumoured that Season 8 will feature the Dragonpit once more, but will we be seeing Danaerys, Jon and Cersei this time around?   

Catch up with season 7 here >   The land of ice and fire: What lies beyond the wall?   8. “Arrowhead”, aka Kirkjufell Mountain   The Night King may be wreaking havoc south of the wall as we speak, however they made their debut north of the wall in Iceland, where Jon Snow & company are rescued (in somewhat good time) by Dany and her dragons in s7e06.   A common piece of travel advice would be to drive along the Ring Road via the Snæfellsnes Peninsula for a chance to see the northern lights and many more popular Icelandic features. The Cave of Dreams…& Kit Harrington of course, aka Grjótagjá   Notorious for it’s appearance in s3e05, is Iceland’s Grjótagjá cave, oozing with surrealism. What looks like another Icelandic rift, is really a secret entrance boasting a small pool of glittering blue water, originally formed by lava.   Please note, this trail is not for the faint-hearted, and is for experienced hikers. 10. “The Pass to Eyrie”, aka Thingvellir National Park

Despite popular belief, Iceland plays host to another famous location other than the land beyond the wall. Taking you back in time to season four, where we witness the most gruelling battle of them all… Brienne vs The Hound on the pass to Eyrie. This scene was actually filmed in Thingvellir National Park, a mere stones throw away from Icelandic capital, Reykjavik!

The Destination on Everyone’s Mind

But it doesn’t stop there. If it’s the biggest, longest or craziest celebrations you’re after, look no further!

For the Biggest, BANGKOK

Need we say more? The capital is a one-stop-shop for young travellers, with floating street markets, reclining Buddha’s and more places to party than anywhere else on the island. During Songkran, you can expect offices, banks and restaurants to be shut down completely and most hotels hosting ticket-only pool parties (for the more sophisticated bunch).

For our fellow outgoing travellers and backpackers, Khao San Road is the place to dry off. Expect bright lights, infectious energy and a cornucopia of culture and diversity at every corner until the early hours of the morning!

If sky-bars and secret rooftop locations are more your style, worry not! Silom Road has it all and is closed off to traffic for Songkran – All 5km of it. Aptly associated with the popular Hangover 2 movie, you can watch the chaos ensue from 63 storeys up, in Bangkok’s Sky Bar or immerse yourself in the epicentre of Songkran activities for a truly local, musical experience.

For the Longest, PATTAYA

Renowned as a party city, it should come as no surprise that Songkran lasts longer here than anywhere else! The festival pours into the following week in Pattaya, giving you 7 extra days in your new favourite place. Expect fire engines at hand helping you refill your buckets and water pistols, and pick up trucks transformed into mobile parties on Beach Road, where stages are also set up for live music and foam machines.

It’s safe to say that Pattaya is one giant wet and wild party during Songkran… So much so that even half of the residents flee for shelter mid-April to avoid the chaos! For roads where every building is a bar and for serious competitors who aren’t afraid to get caught in some serious crossfire, Soi 6 and Soi 7 is definitely where you want to be!

You may also be lucky enough to witness police swapping out side-arms for water pistols, (and giving as good as they get!) or even monks touring around on the back of pick-up trucks giving their blessings and remaining the only dry people left in the entirety of Pattaya (which you should definitely not change).

For the Craziest, CHIANG MAI

We get it. You’re probably wondering how Chiang Mai could possibly give you any more than Bangkok or Pattaya… Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
Wringing in the Thai New Year on a 4km route around one of Thailand’s famous moats, (yes, a moat) with sound systems along the entire route and street stalls for your emergency ammunition, is definitely one for your travel bucket list.

Water is said to reach knee-level at Thapae Gate, (the major entrance into the Old City), as water is slung from balconies at rooftops when you least expect it, and taken directly from the surrounding moat. It is truly is a sight that has to be seen to be believed. If you find yourself wanting a quick-escape route, exploring smaller streets and interacting with locals is your best bet, although this does come at the price of a small soak.

Another popular location for young travellers is Nimman Road, boasting a modern atmosphere filled with musicians, DJ’s and performers entertaining revellers of all-ages, (as if there isn’t enough going on), just outside of Maya Mall! As 6pm (local time) approaches, the crowds flood to the notorious night markets in Chiang Mai for some well-deserved nourishment, as the celebrations continue until the early hours of the morning.
