Going Coastal

Is there anything better than being by the coast?

No matter the time of year, whether you are being slapped in the face by small sand particles and sea spray or laid out catching some rays, spending some time on the beach can be a transformative experience. There are even scientifically-backed benefits, the sound of waves lapping the shore alone is beneficial for our wellbeing, reducing stress and creating a calming effect.

So if you’re looking for the ultimate relaxing trip to help blow out the cobwebs get to the coast for some vitamin sea! Here are some of our favourites to help inspire that next trip.

Kynance Cove, England

Found on the Lizard peninsula in the very south of mainland Britain, Kynance Cove is an absolute gem. Be sure to check the tide times to make the most of this spectacular little beach. On a low tide you have the opportunity to explore sea caves and the unique geomorphic features of the cove but be careful to keep an eye on the incoming tide.

If able-bodied leave the car behind in Lizard and take the southwest coastal trail, this 50 min walk will take you along some fantastic coastal scenery that’s worth the trip alone.

For salty-aired panoramas and four-star facilities stay at YHA Lizard Point.

Praia do Rocha, Portugal

The south of Portugal has so many beautiful beaches it’s difficult to choose just one but, in the end, we landed on Praia do Rocha. With azure waters, great for swimming, soft sand, and backed by rust-tinted cliffs this is definitely a beach worth visiting. Found close to the city of Portimão you won’t be at a loss for things to do in the area.

For a bit of added adventure check out the Benagil caves. These magnificent caves will leave you awe-struck by their beauty. Under no circumstance, however, attempt to swim to the caves with strong currents you are better off hopping on a guided boat tour, into a kayak or onto a standup paddleboard.

Our association in Portugal, Pousadas de Juventude, offers some great accommodation options in the Algarve and has a hostel in Portimão

Whitehaven, Australia

If you’re looking for a taste of paradise it has to be Whitehaven beach, Whitsunday Islands, Australia. Regularly taking the top spot on World’s best beaches lists and it’s easy to see why. Famous for its pristine environment, with powdery white sands and crystal clear water this is a beach you won’t want to leave and will remain dreaming of well after your trip.

Head to the lookout at Tongue Point for ultimate views over the coastline and keep an eye out for Dolphins and Turtles that are regulars in the area. If snorkelling, be mindful of these animals too, give them space and remember to never float above Turtles as you may block them from coming up for air.

Stay at Airlie Beach YHA and take the ferry across, you won’t regret it!

Praia de Maresia, Brazil

Looking for a great surf spot surrounded by lush tropical forest, Praia de Maresia should be on your radar. Regarded as one of Brazil’s top surfing destinations this beach can get busy during peak seasons and the best wave action is seen in the Winter from May- September. If you’re looking for a bit of calm during peak times head down the beach on the right to Canto do Moreira.

The hostel in Maresias beach is great for activities and they regularly organise community events such as beach clean-ups, capoeira classes and surfing lessons. These can be great for getting to know locals and fellow travellers. We always recommend checking at the hostel reception to see what’s going on during your stay.

Stay at Maresias Hostel for an unforgettable experience.

Dead Sea, Israel

For a completely different coastal experience, the Dead Sea is definitely one for the bucket list. Technically a saltwater lake, it is the deepest hypersaline lake in the world and nearly 10 times saltier than the ocean. This excess of salt brings with it some fantastic health benefits and gave rise to one of the first recorded health resorts from the time of Herod the Great.

If going for a float take care to keep your head out of the water, no splashing, and make sure not to get any water in your eyes or mouth. There are some great hikes around the area too, and Masada is a must-see for any history buff!

Stay at HI Masada, ideal for looking out over the ancient Havari landscape.
