Hillerød – Copenhagen’s Green Neighbour

Frederiksborg Castle

Just 30 minutes from the increasingly popular and cute as hell city of Copenhagen, you’ll find Hillerød, a small Danish city surrounded by lush forests and boasting a 17th-century castle. Hillerød offers the perfect taste of Denmark outside the country’s capital, and we’ve got the lowdown on what to see and do.

Accommodation:

The hygge vibes are strong with this one! Conveniently located near the train station and Fredriksborg Castle, Danhostel Hillerød sits on more than 15 beautiful acres of protected land. Commune with nature as you kick back and relax in a rowing boat on their lake, rent a bike and cycle into town, or simply grab a book from the hostel’s library and relax in the serene common areas.

Things to Do:

Hillerød’s crown jewel may well be its 17th-century Frederiksborg Castle, the largest Renaissance castles in Scandinavia, and one of the top attractions in all of Denmark. The castle is home to the Museum of National History, allowing you to step back in time and imagine you’re royalty as you wander the beautifully ornate halls, taking in 500 years of Danish history. No visit to the Frederiksborg Castle is complete without a stroll through Frederik IV’s impeccably manicured Baroque Garden.

Esrum Lake is Denmark’s second-largest lake, and is good for summertime swims and freezing refreshing winter dips. If staying dry is more your style, pack a picnic, rent a kayak or a canoe, and enjoy lunch on the water.

Formerly accessible only to the King and used for hunting and horse breeding, Store Dyrehave Forest is part of UNESCO’s World Heritage Site, the Par Force Hunting Landscape in North Zealand, and offers excellent hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding.

30 minutes outside of Hillerød you’ll find Bakken, the world’s oldest amusement park, having been founded in 1583. Surrounded by 400 year old trees and wild deer, the park is home to rollercoasters, ferris wheels, nighttime cabaret shows, and more. The best part? Entry is free!

Indulge in some shopping and dining at SlotsArkaderne, in Hillerød’s historic centre. With an award-winning architectural design and 60 shops, cafes, and restaurants, a visit here is a well-deserved treat after adventures in the city’s green spaces.

Getting there:

• From Copenhagen Central Station  – 40 minutes by car.
