Meet the 2016 HI Sustainability Fund Competition winners!

Untitled design (2)

The 2016 HI Sustainability Fund Competition has been very exciting, with serious candidates showing the depth of their commitment to sustainability. The general public, our sustainability coordinators and a panel of international jury, have voted and we are pleased to announce the winners!

1st place

SOLAR CEILING FOR ECOLOGICAL TRAILS, Spain

008 - SOLAR CEILING FOR ECOLOGICAL TRAILS - Spain2

CO2 saved, per year: 4.7 tonnes

Grant: £10,000

What is it about? Installation of translucent solar panels on the roof covering the central patio of the establishment and of photovoltaic installation with semi-transparent panels on the roof of the inner courtyard to induce an effect on energy consumption and deliver a reduced footprint.

2nd place

WATER THE GARDENS BY WASHING LAUNDRY, USA

010 - WATER THE GARDENS BY WASHING LAUNDRY - USA

CO2 saved, per year: 0.06 tonnes

Grant: £5,000

What is it about? Help us reuse 100% of the water from washing laundry to water landscapes and gardens around the hostel, to fight the effects of Climate Change which puts this landscape is at risk. The result would be equal to reusing 104,100 litres each year or the equivalent of 640 bathtubs.

3rd place

THE HYBRID REFRIGERATOR – Harnessing the Canadian Winter, Canada

001 - The Hybrid Refrigerator – harnessing the Canadian Winter

CO2 saved, per year: 2 tonnes

Grant: £2,028

What is it about? Hybrid refrigerators are designed to use outside air for cooling when the temperature drops below 4 degrees Celsius. The design takes advantage of existing technologies, putting them to optimal use for refrigeration in a wilderness hostel setting.

And guess what? Guests who have booked directly on hihostels.com have been so generous that we had enough funds to grant a fourth project!

4th place

MESSAGE ON A BOTTLE, NO PLASTIC WASTE IN OUR WATER, Netherlands

004 - Message on a bottle, no plastic waste in our water

CO2 saved, per year:  0.0705 tonnes

Grant: £1,466.92

What is it about?  A 3-year program to involve guests by selling reusable bottles, providing drinking taps and collecting PET bottles and plastic in the hostels.

Once again, the high number of votes and the involvement of various internal and external stakeholders show that environment, global footprint and climate change represent a contemporary concern that everyone has a share of responsibility in. The tonnes of CO2 saved by the winning and running up projects are considerable and form an important part of a continuous improvement process for our HI network. So far, this competition has granted 13 great projects with a total of £135,651.42, saving 1,525.0205+ tonnes of CO2 per year of activity of the granted projects. Woa.

We would like to congratulate all the authors of the candidate projects that gave their all to elaborate original initiatives, to share them internally and externally and to think about the impact of hospitality and tourism on the environment. By doing so, they prove that they are responsible and that they care about respecting the planet in order for future generations to be able to enjoy all the wonders it offers every day.
