Hostel of the week: Sjoa Hostel, Sjoa, Norway

IMG_3110“Sjoa hostel is run by the nicest host, Tor. He has run the hostel for a long time, and before that his parents ran the place. It is located in the valley 3 and a half hours north of Oslo with all sorts of activities nearby. Tor does a lot to create a good atmosphere for his guests and has an outdoor bar and a large fireplace. The hostel is very well suited for groups and people looking for an adventure!”

We spoke to Tor about what’s so special about Sjoa hostel, their high quality status and holding the coveted HI-Q certification, and how you can make the most of this beautiful, tranquil area of Norway.

About Sjoa hostel

Sjoa Hostel is beautifully located in a quiet area between the rivers Sjoa and Gudbrandsdalslågen. The hostel was originally a farm from the 13th century, but we offer high standard accommodation and facilities, regardless of the type you choose: family apartments, double, 3, or 4-bedded rooms in our new building. All our rooms and apartments have en suite bathrooms. The breakfast buffet and other meals are served in the main building, built in 1747. Here, the open fireplace and the timber walls create a special atmosphere.

Local attractions

From the hostel you have a great starting point for hikes in the mountains – we are located close to the magnificent national parks Rondane, Jotunheimen and Dovrefjell. The river Sjoa is also well suited for fishing, and you can fish for free on the premises of the hostel.

What’s so unique about Sjoa?

Sjoa Hostel has a varied and extensive activity program for both adults and kids, e.g. white water rafting, canyoning, river boarding, rope activities, mountain horse riding, glacier hiking and muskox safari. The rivers nearby are some of Europe’s best rafting rivers and there are plenty of activities to do in the area. In the evenings, guests can relax by the outdoor fireplace.

HI-Q certification: the quality stamp of approval

Being HI-Q-certified means that our guests at Sjoa hostel can be sure that they will get a good experience and high standards.

What does the HI-Q certification mean to you as a manager?

It gives me better routines, more efficiency and a certainty that what we deliver is good!

What’s coming up? Any local events, festivals or attractions to tip off our travellers for the year ahead?

The white water rafting season starts in May and continues throughout the summer. Do not miss this experience!
