Happy Thanksgiving from HI

It’s almost time for that long weekend holiday in the USA (27th – 30th November). Over in the US, museums are closed and the big city slickers head home, or out of town, for a huge family feed. But that doesn’t mean the cities are quiet over the holiday period; on the contrary, there’s still plenty to do and see for travellers, whether you’re filling up on treasured national Thanksgiving treats in celebration of the harvest, joining the shopping frenzy on Black Friday, or volunteering to do some good through this thoughtful – and thankful – holiday season.

You might be thankful for a heads up about what’s going on this Thanksgiving with HI USA, too:

Be thankful for… huge family meals

The generous lot at HI Sacramento are fixing folks up with a traditional family meal for all guests! Thanksgiving is about giving thanks for many things, but chiefly celebrates gratefulness for the bounty of the land, and historically the first Thanksgiving meal, a multi-day feast where Pilgrim settlers shared a table with Native Americans.

If your tummy is rumbling for roast turkey, pie, festivities with friends you haven’t met yet, and more pie, then head to North California for some home-cooked goodness.

Take a look at what they’re up to on Facebook.

HI USA are throwing another mega tri-hostel Thanksgiving celebration in San Francisco, bringing together the Golden City’s three hostels and joining forces with a meal to rival all meals.

You can see from last year’s joint effort that everyone mucked in, and had a lot of fun.

Be thankful for… parades

At this time of year, everyone in the big cities of the United States is lining the streets to watch marching bands, prancing performers and giant floats. Festivities in Boston are no exception, and as the home of this American holiday, where better to celebrate Thanksgiving? Renditions of the nutcracker, gorgeous fall foliage, ice skating on Boston Common’s frog pond and heading to the historical Plymouth parade are all part of the experience here.

Be thankful for… travel

Travel opens up minds and opportunities for many, but not everyone has the opportunity to experience the world and all it has to offer. This is why we think that travel should be rewarding – not costly – and HI USA are arming people with the power of affordable travel all the time, through their Great Hostel Give Back program (GHGB). For the fifth year running, you can bag a free overnight stay for 10 or more people if you volunteer for at least two hours in the surrounding community.

What are you thankful for this Thanksgiving? We’d love to hear from you in the comments below.
