Why you should visit Iguaçu Falls

Imagine an ordinary waterfall. Now multiply the number of falls and the force of the water dozens of times and you’ll be close to what happens at Iguaçu Falls, the icon that span the border between Argentina and Brazil. Raw power, mesmerising views and the magnificent beauty of tropical jungles surrounding one of the greatest wonders of the world will make your heart beat faster and give you memories to cherish for a lifetime.

With 275 cascades and 1.5 million litres of water per second, Iguaçu Falls are wider than Victoria and taller than Niagara Falls, making it a one-of-a-kind phenomenon. Soak up the fine mist that sprays over the walkways and the viewpoints or take a real close-up by going on a guided boat ride.

You can also explore beautiful flora and fauna of the Iguaçu National Park, a protected area of 185.000 hectares, wander through the forest trails and with a bit of luck get a glimpse at monkeys and toucans. The abundance of natural beauty has made this spot a worldwide icon and has been recognised as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Miguel Angel Allou, owner of Paudimar Campestre Hostel, said: “Tourism here has grown significantly over the past 40 years. Last year alone, over one million people visited the National Park; that’s why we’ve even adapted many hostel features to suit the preferences of a modern traveller.

“My hostel is no longer simply about a cheap bed. We offer 24-hour reception service, air-conditioning in rooms, free Wi-Fi and a swimming pool, a bar where guests can enjoy a real Brazilian cocktail, a restaurant and a games room. For sports lovers, we even offer football, volleyball and basketball fields.”

And if you struggle finding a bed here, come and visit another HI hostel in Foz do Iguaçu Paudimar Falls Hostel, where you’ll be spoilt for a choice of activities to get stuck into such as the abseiling course, Rappell Canion Iguaçu, or rafting on the challenging river course.

Also popular are tours of Itaipu Hydroelectric Plant, the world’s largest generator of renewable energy and of Bird Park where you can admire colourful toucans, hummingbirds and parrots. Toucans are quite friendly and curious so don’t be afraid to come in closer to take a perfect holiday shot.

A trip to the falls will be worth it, as manager Miguel Angel says: “I know many beautiful places in the whole world and I can say that only few things fascinate me as much as the falls,”
