YHAI Reconstructs Damaged School Building Due to Cloudburst at Leh, Jammu & Kashmir

During August 2010 many parts of the Leh District and its adjoining areas of Jammu and Kashmir of India were greatly damaged by the flash floods. Youth Hostels Association of India (YHAI)  decided to help the victims of flood flash in view of its long association with Ladakh. Past president of IYHF and National Chairman of YHAI, Dr. Harish K Saxena visited Leh from 6th to 8th Oct., 2010 and had discussions with the Deputy Commissioner (a Life Member of YHAI) and Zonal Education Officer of Leh.  They identified a Tashi Govt. Primary and Middle School at Gatsal, Choglamsar near Leh which was badly damaged due to mud slides.  About 60 school children from under privileged families were relocated to tents and a hall of an adjoining school.

YHAI on behalf of its members decided to undertake the reconstruction of the school building through an agency identified by the Deputy Commissioner, Leh.  National Chairman appealed to all the members, Units and State Branches of YHAI to contribute to the YHAI Leh Relief Fund. Accordingly Rs.5,13,111/- has been received against the YHAI Leh Relief Fund.

The Deputy Commissioner, Leh constituted a Committee of Shri Sonam Angchuk, Zonal Education Officer and Shri Moses who is Life Member of YHAI to look into the construction work of the school. The school reconstruction has been completed and is currently operational.
