Photo of the week: Dubrovnik in Croatia

Dubrovnik in Croatia from Backpacks and Bunkbeds

The Photo of the Week comes from Neil at Backpacks and Bunkbeds and is an excellent view of the beautiful city of Dubrovnik. We caught up with Neil and asked him what the story was behind his photo.

“I’ve always wanted to visit Croatia, for as long as I can remember, but I was never quite sure why.  To be honest I didn’t know a lot about the country, and hadn’t heard a lot about it in terms of backpacking. My yearning to visit probably had more to do with Croatian footballing hero Davor Suker chipping Danish goalkeeper Peter Schmiechael from the edge of 18 yard box during the 1996 European Championships, than it did with knowing what the country held in store for travellers like me. That sounds pretty sad, but I’m afraid that’s just how my mind works.

So, in June 2010 three friends and I boarded a wizz air flight to Split.  The plan was originally to stay in a friend of a friend’s apartment just outside of Split, but that fell through and as a result the four of us ended up seeing a bit more of Croatia than planned, no bad thing.  Out of the airport we drove up to the Plitvice lakes for a couple of days before return to Split for a week, and then finally onto Dubrovnik.

Tasked with finding our guesthouse from the Dubrovnik coach station, we first got a cab to the foot of what looked like a never ending staircase, and then we got our legs pumping.  Up and up and up, higher and higher.   Dripping with sweat from the midday sun and heavy load on my back I had no interest in taking in what was around me, all I knew that was after an uncomfortable four hour bus journey from Split and now an accent to what felt like the top of Croatia, I needed a shower!

Falling into our room as my legs gave way, air was needed.  The girls had already called shotgun on the first showers so in search of fresh air I threw open the one solitary window in our room.  Above is the photo of what greeted my eyes, it was gorgeous!  Dubrovnik’s old town at its best.  All of a sudden that journey and the burning in my legs seemed totally worth it.”

Thanks Neil for sharing this with us. If you are interested in sending us a photo for next week, all the details can be found here!
