World Humanitarian Day

World Humanitarian DayEvery day we rise in the morning to the news on the TV and radio, or the stories in the newspapers that continually remind us of the natural, economic, social and ecological problems of the world we live in. How can it be possible? Sometimes it is easy to feel like the world is in crisis.

But always there is hope for humanity. Every day we come across inspiring people making a difference to the lives of ordinary people. People are concerned about what is happening all over the world – from the city they live in, to the people in the country they have never visited. People who want to volunteer their services and make a difference while at the same time having fun, meeting new people and experiencing a different way of life. For every person in crisis, there is also someone who wants to help. Today is a special day.

Today is World Humanitarian Day and a celebration of people helping people. The 2011 Campaign is to help bring hope to the world and the people who strive to make a difference. As individuals, we can also be heroes; we are surrounded by people who need help everywhere and everyone can make a difference, no matter how small it may seem. As UN Secretary General said today,

“… This is also a day to examine our own lives and consider what more we can do to help — to reach out to people enduring conflict, disaster and hardship.  Let those we honour today inspire us to start our own journey to make the world a better place and bring our human family more closely together.”

We can all make a difference, and today is a great day to start!
